DARKER TIMES

I’ve always heard that all things have pro’s and cons, just as I sat lamenting the power deficiencies of the giant of Africa, I was told that even that had a positive side. I have to be honest, I am not sure I agree but here’s to finding out if it’s true.

One thing about not having stable power supply is the unplanned idleness that comes with it, we find that we’ve grown so accustomed to having our phones and devices active all day long and the moment that’s no longer possible we’re left counting the number of ceiling boards there are, or calculating how fast a bird flies, or so help us God, forced to bond with family members.

In other circumstances we can try falling back to prehistoric items like pen and paper to scribble down all the mumbo-jumbo in our now festering “devil’s workshop” . For those who might be more resilient to boredom or who are not so attached to devices, daydreaming might be just the thing but that doesn’t always payoff since the average African parent can’t stand seeing their child lazing around… Then comes the “wash this”, “clean that”, “where is this person”, and “when was the last time you spoke to whom?” Some legends may be bold enough to brave the storms of educational books to quench their thirst for knowledge or even debate with their Imaginary self on subjects like why the earth spins continuously. Some of us who still have our baby self’s active get to see added beauty in the world, from staring at leaves with water droplets on them, to savoring the deep red of the parlor furniture but all in all I think a lack of electricity at times allows the average Nigerian to create, nurture, and form non-internet related relationships. Especially in times when there’s been a power outage for a week and counting, it becomes inevitable to avoid the people around you, to join in those group discussions that normally won’t happen if everyone’s eyes were glued to their phone.

Lastly, I think would be the fact that a lot of us are cut off from the internet long enough for trends to come and go, you don’t see us jumping on every trend because we all try to cram in as much into every illuminated moment as possible, so jumping on all trending ideas does not sound very ideal. I really do hope that with all these wonderful points I have been able to show that indeed life without light might not be as completely bad as you imagined.
